Happy Halloween! I decided that today is the perfect day to re-release the knit Punkin. This is an easy peasy color work pattern. To create the knit punkin you will knit a tube and cinch one side, stuff it, and then cinch the other side and decorate with a stem of your choosing.
I also am excited to announce I’ve added a second color to the Pumpkin Stem listing in my Etsy shop. You can now get stems in brown or black.
If you’d like to watch the video tutorial you can check out my YouTube channel. I am so close to my goal of one thousand subscribers by Christmas – just 6 subs away.

Now let’s get to making a Punkin!
Materials:
Super Bulky Yarn (2 Colors)
I used Wool Ease Thick and Quick in Charcoal and Celebration.
8mm Needles
Tapestry Needle
Scissors
Abbreviations:
R – Round
K – Knit
CA – Color A
CB – Color B
Notes:
- Punk-in can be made in three different sizes. Small (Medium, Large).
- To create your own sizes cast on a multiple of 8, plus one if you join in the round the way that I suggest – 4 stitches of Color A and 4 stitches of Color B.
Pattern:
Cast on 33 (41, 49) and join in the round.
Making sure your stitches aren’t twisted, the stitch you casted on last (where the working yarn and tail will be) should be on your right hand needle. Slip the first stitch you casted on (it’s on the left needle) to the right needle then pass over the last stitch you cast on, over the first. You now have 32 (40, 48) stitches on your needles.
R1: With Color A, knit around. (32, 40, 48)
R2-5: (CA-K4,C B-K4) repeat around.
R6-9: (CB-K4, CA-K4) repeat around.
Repeat R2-9 – all sizes.
For Small knit 1 more round in CB, then move to finishing.
For Medium Repeat R2-5, then knit 1 round in CB, then move to finishing.
For Large Repeat R2-9, then knit 1 round in CB, then move to finishing.
Finishing: Cut a scrap piece of black yarn about 8 inches, thread tapestry needle and sew through all of the live stitches pulling them off the needles. Once all of the stitches are off the knitting needles you can turn the pumpkin inside out and cinch tight. Tie into a knit.
Turn the pumpkin right side out. Cut another 8 inch scrap piece of yarn in Color A and sew though the cast on edge weaving in and out of the stitches. Before cinching close stuff the pumpkin to your desired firmness. Cinch and tie close. With one end of the yarn sew through the center of the pumpkin to the cast off edge, sew it back up to the cast on edge and tie tight to cinch the top and bottom together to create an indent.
Now you can decorate your punk-in with whatever stem you desire.
You can find 3D printed pumpkin stems in my shop in brown or black.

Thanks so much for being here and supporting my work. Happy making.
