Seaside Hair Trio | Free Crochet Pattern

It’s time for another free pattern. This week I present to you the Seaside Hair Trio; this trio includes a hair clip, bow, and headband using the special stitch from the Kitchen Set. I was inspired to make something using the remaining yarn from the kitchen set, something that’s quick to make and perfect for summer wear.

For the clip and bow, gauge isn’t crucial but it is provided; keep in mind that a smaller hook will create a smaller project, and a bigger hook will create a bigger project. Gauge for the headband is more important because you need it to be long enough to be tied around your head but the headband can easily be customized, just be sure that whatever you do to one half, you do to the other.

Supreme Cotton by Universal Yarn (Clip – 11 yards, Bow – 38 yards, Headband – 68 yards)
Worsted Weight
4mm (G) + 5mm (H) Hook or hook that meets gauge (Tulip Hook are my current favorite, and I’m obsessed with this full set.)
Tapestry Needle for seaming and weaving in ends
Barrettes – 2 inch
Aleene’s 33260 Ultimate Multi-Surface Adhesive, 1.5 oz.(for adhering bow/clip to barrette, or you can sew them to clips instead)

16 sts x 16 rows = 4×4 inches (4mm hook, Bow + Clip)
14 sts x 12 rows = 4×4 inches (5mm, Headband)

r – row
ch(s) – chain(s)
sc- single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
st(s) – stitch(es)

When a number follows the stitch, you will work that number across the following stitches. Example: sc 2, you will sc across 2 stitches.

Special Stitch: Sc into the st 3 rows below (Row 1 in pattern). Insert hook into the top of the hdc st 3 rows below the current stitch, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook. For a photo tutorial check out the Seaside Kitchen Set.

Hair Clip:

Using 4mm hook, ch 12, begin in second chain from hook.

Row 1: HDC across, ch 1, turn. (11 sts)

Row 2: HDC across, ch 1, turn.

Row 3: HDC across, ch 1, turn.

Row 4: *Sc 2, sc into the st 3 rows below, (repeat from * to last 2 sts) sc 2.

Row 5: HDC across, ch 1, turn.

Border: (Right Side) SLST evenly around entire project, finish off, weave in ends.

Row 1: HDC across, ch 1, turn. (9 sts)

Row 2: HDC across, ch 1, turn.

Row 4: *Sc, sc into the st 3 rows below, (repeat from * to last st) sc.

Repeat Row 1-4 a total of 4 times. (16 rows)

Row 17: HDC across, finish off with a 24 inch tail.

Join to starting row and repeat R1-17. (Example below)

Left Handed

Right Handed

Step 1: Bring the last row of each section and use the tail to seam together.

Step 2: Cinching the bow – Fold bow in half so that the starting edge and seamed edge are lined up on top of each other, use the tail and a tapestry needle to weave back and forth through the center of the bow going through both layers of fabric.

Step 3: Pull on the tail, and push the center of bow to cinch it, then begin wrapping the tail around the center of the bow to your liking. Weave in ends.

Step 4: Sew or glue to the hair clip or headband of your liking.

Make 2 using 5mm hook.

Row 1: Ch 2, HDC 2 in second ch from hook, ch 1, turn. (2 sts)

Row 2: 2 HDC in each stitch, ch 1 turn. (4 sts)

Row 3: 2 HDC in first stitch, HDC to last stitch, 2 HDC, ch 1, turn. (6 sts)

Row 4: Repeat Row 3. (8 sts)

Row 5: Sc 2, sc into the st 3 rows below (st 2 from Row 2), sc 2, sc into st 3 rows below (st 3 from Row 2), 2 sc, ch 1, turn.

Row 6: HDC across, ch 1, turn.

Row 8: HDC across, ch 1, turn.

Row 9: *Sc 2, sc into the st 3 rows below (repeat from * to last 2 sts), 2 sc, ch 1 turn.

Repeat R6-9 a total of 9 times (or more if you’d like the headband to be longer), then repeat R6, finish off.

Finishing: Line up the two ends and seam together. I used the mattress stitch but you are welcome to use your preferred method. Weave in ends.
