Olivine Mug Rug | Free Crochet Pattern

Next in the Olivine Collection is a mug rug! It worked similarly to the other patterns in the collection but is worked flat instead of in the round. Working the SC3LO is a little different so I have provided some tutorial photos. I don’t have anything else to say, so let’s get to it.

Hook Size – 4.5mm

Re-Up Lion Brand Yarn

30 yards + DK weight

Tapestry Needle


SC- Single Crochet
HDC – Half Double Crochet
SC3LO – Single Crochet in 3rd loop only
ch – Chain
sp – Space
sk – Skip
st(s) – Stitch(es)
R – Row

12 rows x 16 sts = 4×4 inches

– When working across starting chain, work in the back bumps.

– When working SC3LO on Right Side, you will work into the horizontal bar on the back side of the HDC you are working into.

– When working SC3LO on Wrong Side, you will work into the horizontal bar on the front side of of the HDC you are working into.



Ch 18 sts, begin in second ch from hook.

R1(RS): HDC across, turn, ch 1. (17 sts)

R2: SC3LO to last st, sc, turn, ch 1.

R3: *HDC, ch 1, sk 1, repeat from * to last st, HDC, turn, ch 1.

R4: *HDC, HDC in ch sp, repeat from * to end of row, turn, ch 1.

Repeat R2-4 3 more times, repeat R2, move on to Row 15/Border.

Row 15/Border (RS): [*SC, ch 1, sk 1, repeat from * to last st of row, (sc, ch 1, sc) in last st, work sc evenly along side. ] repeat [ ] working across bottom edge and second side, join, finish off and weave in ends.

Fringe: Cut strips of yarn 5.5 inches long, and create fringe in the ch spaces using 2 pieces of yarn per space. (10 spaces of fringe on each end). Trim fringe to desired length.
